Roper Mountain Science Center is a facility of the Greenville County School District. Gene Altman worked with Harper General Contractors on the new Environmental Science and Sustainability Building with a contract amount of $300,000. It is complete with exhibits and technology supported by the Roper Mountain Science Center Association. It features seven state-of-the art classrooms and a variety of interactive learning experiences. The building houses a new on-site kitchen and cafeteria that will host a Culinary Employability Credential and School-Based Business Enterprise for students with disabilities and is complete with custom Wasserstrom serving counters, a Bally walk-in combo box, Champion dish machine, Continental refrigeration and a variety of other vendors for convection ovens, convection steamers, kettles, and braising pans.
Roper Mountain is developing a sustainability curriculum for middle schools in collaboration with the Shi Center for Sustainability at Furman University that will be a model for other school districts throughout the state and nation. Greenville County School District will also expand educational offerings in environmental science, ecology, earth, and life sciences for students in the fourth through seventh grade.
